Just about anything that pulls a vacuum can be used for gas sampling.  Applications can run the gamut from very inexpensive pumps to very expensive multi-pump set ups in the case of leak detection or mass spectroscopy.

The application is very straight forward, the pump takes or pulls a representative sample from a process stream.  HyVac pumps have been used in such diverse fields as pollution monitoring to gas pulmonary analyzers.  These samples are then used to determine parts per million or parts per billion measurements.
