Problems
with Investment Casting
This procedure usually used in the jewelry manufacturing industry is where
a plaster investment design is hit with a vacuum to cure the
investment. In this process the by product of the curing under
vacuum procedure is water coming from the curing plaster of Paris.
Cold traps are recommended as is regular inspection of the condition of
the vacuum pump oil due to contamination of the oil from the water in the
plaster.
Usually the same pumps are used to degas the molten metal poured into
the investment. Degassing in this particular operation is relatively
clean and we would simply recommend a particulate trap for this operation
to stop any metal "flakes" from getting in the pump inlet.
